EMBARK ON A CREATIVE JOURNEY IN CLASSICAL TRADITION
A well-executed drawing appears powerful, uncomplicated, eloquent, and in some ways, magical. Come, enjoy an old-world approach to fundamental visual studies through classical and traditional drawing workshops and classes. All levels of experience welcome.
THERE IS NOTHING ACCIDENTAL ABOUT A WELL EXECUTED DRAWING
Thankfully, the magic of drawing well is comfortably accessible to each one of us with a little helping of guided practice. As we begin to explore principles that underlie our visual world, we add new dimensions of power and poetic value to our creative work. Within the first 20% of the drawing process an artist can reveal 80% of his visual understanding . It is that immediate response to our visual world that makes drawing unique and exciting.
For over 30 years, Mark Anthony has taught artists and art enthusiasts of all levels to understand their visual world through interpretation rather than copy techniques. His old-world approach to observation and manual drawing follows traditional models derived from European ateliers. These include drawing from masterworks, classical sculpture and the live model. Artists comfortably learn how to work intuitively from life with great accuracy, confidence and poetic freedom. This is a friendly, supportive environment. Complete demonstrations gently lead students of all levels forward through a logical process.

A bit about mark anthony
“Celebrating poetic simplicity, it’s power, it’s beauty”
While young music students were learning and practicing great musical masterworks, I turned my creative interest to great visual masterworks by Rembrandt and others. I was convinced that their powerful, poetic, visual expressions would become the finest soil for cultivating fundamental skills in visual understanding and artistic expression.
After decades of research and teaching, I am still fascinated by the reality that our easy access to modern technology has not helped us to match the great artistic development achieved through old-world studio disciplines. No technical device can replace our own magnificent manual ability to see, interpret and understand our visual world and combine these interpretations with our own deep seated emotional, poetic and artistic, albeit human, voice. The magic is deep within us and surprisingly accessible.
Drawing has and continues to capture me because it is our most immediate response to our living visual world. Manual drawing challenges every aspect of our visual understanding. Amazingly, with the simplest of tools an artist can develop the ability to express in a drawing the power of any great painting. This combination of simplicity and power excites me very much.
