A bit about mark anthony
While young music students were learning and practicing great masterworks by Beethovan, Schubert, Chopan, and Liszt, I turned my creative interest to practicing from visual masterworks by Rembrandt, Michelangelo, Raphael and Rubens (some examples have been added to the above portfolio). I was convinced that their powerful poetic visual expressions would become the finest soil for cultivating fundamental skills in visual theory and expression from life, regardless of the medium.
After more than 30 years of research and teaching, I am still fascinated with the reality that our easy access to high definition modern technology has not enhanced or successfully matched the great artistic developement so wonderfully demonstrated by manual study and expression from past ages. The point is, it appears that no camera, computer or automated device can replace our own magnificent manual ability to see, interpret and understand our visual world and then combine these interpretations with our own deep seated emotional or artistic, albeit human, voice.
Drawing has captured me because it is our most immediate response to our living visual world. It challenges every aspect of our visual comprehension in terms of fundamental understanding. And with the most simple of tools, an artist can develop the ability to express in a drawing the power of any great painting. This combination of simplicity and power excites me very much.
